It's a Mystery Reader

Last week, we prepared for our final November Mystery Reader.  Here were our clues:

• I am the mother of two boys.
• I work with people who are handicapped
• I am the wife of a Preacher
• "You are your mother's child!"
• I have red hair

Do you know who THIS mystery reader was?  Quentin was very quick to figure this one out and knew it was his mom, Mrs. S!

Mrs. S read The Little Engine That Could and shared information with us about Braille.  It was a great visit and we learned a lot!

Unfortunately, I wasn't at school that day so I couldn't take any pictures (sorry!).

A Need

We've been learning about needs and wants in 1A.  This week we talked a lot about clothing.  We read the story Pelle's New Suit by Elsa Beskow and learned the steps from sheep to clothing.

Mrs. Weiss joined us to help us with a weaving activity.

We've been weaving in our spare time any time we can!  

Mrs. Ekey also came to talk to us.  She showed us some wool right from a sheep, demonstrated how to card the wool, and how to spin it.  We each got a little piece of wool to feel. 

We're so thankful for the nice clothing we have. 

First graders, as we head into the colder months, please remember our fifth grade buddies are hosting a coat drive.  Please bring in any new or gently used and washed coats (children and adult sizes) to give to someone in need by December 9th.  All of the coats will be donated to the Esperanza Center in Fells Point. 

Cruisin' Through 50 Days in First Grade!

We celebrated our 50th day of school with a 1950s theme!  

Many students arrived dressed in 1950's attire.

Our day was centered around learning about the 1950s and about the number 50.  Take a look at our slideshow for a peek at the fun we had cruisin' through the 50s!

A Big Mystery!

Today we enjoyed a visit from our first Mystery Reader of the month.  Here were our clues:

1. I am a Dad.
2. I wear glasses.
3. My work is computers.
4. I love carrot cake.
5. I was born in Ireland.

It was Mr. C.......Roisin's Dad!  

He read the story The Little Red Pen!

When the story was over Mr. C gave us each a 10 color pen!

We enjoyed creating doodles with our different colors.  Thank you, Mr. C for reading to us today!

November PLUSS Day- Quaker Community Day!

Our November PLUSS Day at Friends was a day to give back to the community and think about the Quaker Testimonies of Community and Stewardship.  Here's a slideshow with many of the highlights of our wonderful day together (warning..... it's a long one!)!



Jump Rope for Heart, casseroles for Our Daily Bread, cards and bags for Meals on Wheels, and IBT Buttons for our Reading Buddies sure helped to fill other people's buckets!  By doing this we also filled our own buckets too.  Every first grader should have gone home after our PLUSS Day feeling great about all they had done to help others in the community.
