When the story was over Mr. C gave us each a 10 color pen!

We enjoyed creating doodles with our different colors.  Thank you, Mr. C for reading to us today!

November PLUSS Day- Quaker Community Day!

Our November PLUSS Day at Friends was a day to give back to the community and think about the Quaker Testimonies of Community and Stewardship.  Here's a slideshow with many of the highlights of our wonderful day together (warning..... it's a long one!)!

Jump Rope for Heart, casseroles for Our Daily Bread, cards and bags for Meals on Wheels, and IBT Buttons for our Reading Buddies sure helped to fill other people's buckets!  By doing this we also filled our own buckets too.  Every first grader should have gone home after our PLUSS Day feeling great about all they had done to help others in the community.

Huge thank yous to the following people who helped to make this day so enjoyable:
Mrs. Derengowski
Mrs. Boynton
Mrs. McGinty and the PE department
Ms. Smith
and to all our first graders and families for donating casserole ingredients

First graders, what activity did you enjoy most during our November PLUSS Day?  Post a comment to share with all of us!

Spooky Ghost Math Fun

First graders in my math class get together with Mrs. Meagher's second grade math students each day 10.   Today, we played our math game of the week together.  We practiced using our number sense to identify numbers that were even and odd and also numbers that were between two numbers or greater than or less than a given number.  Here's a few pictures from our time together this morning:

First & Second graders, do you have a favorite math game?  Post a comment to share with all of us.  If you haven't posted a comment to our blog in the past, please be sure to review our commenting guidelines here.

Onomatopoeia

Students in my LA group have been busy reading a mystery this month during our Read to Self time. We created a short comic from our mystery book and provided a narration including an onomatopoeia.  Check them out below:

Going For a Walk.......

After learning about communities and identifying the difference between needs and wants, first graders took a walk around our school community on Tuesday!  We made many stops along the way to identify if various businesses would provide something community members need or want.  We also looked at the different types of shelters in our community.  We identified single family homes, duplexes, an apartment building, and several large homes that have been converted into apartments.   When we reached Roland Avenue, we stopped to drop a very important piece of mail off at the post office and then we toured Eddie's of Roland Park.  We saw many yummy foods from the food groups we've been discussing.  We also got to enjoy a treat.

Here's a slideshow from our community walk:
